East

Tonight I saw the world catch on fire,
beams of amber stretching fingers
and grabbing hold of endless sky

A graceful fight, interlocked until
the threshold of night declares an impasse
and horizons smolder and vanish

If you were here we would dance
on the precipice engulfed by walls of cloud,
the only barrier between us and golden seas

The same sun shared, but different skies,
an altered canvas; so I send it on to you
with leave to be a masterpiece elsewhere

with one request: return and cast auburn
shadows when, at last, we walk on the same
frame until sea and sky blend as one.
